Rescue Those Being Taken Away to Death

Yesterday was the 39^th anniversary of the Roe v Wade Supreme Court decision to legalize abortion in America. It was the worst and most unjust decision ever made by the US Supreme Court.

Since 1973, there have been well over 50 million legal abortions in the United States of America. That’s about 3,200 babies killed every single day in our country (legally).

And experts estimate that there are roughly 42 million abortions performed every year worldwide. That’s about 115,000 babies killed every single day.

In light of these statistics, listen to Proverbs 24:11-12

“Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay each man according to his work?”

Now, this text intentionally gives us no indication as to what specific injustice the author had in mind (someone is being killed and others are unknowingly heading toward destruction). So, this text serves as a general guideline for what God’s people are called to do in the face of violent injustice. If human beings are in danger of being taken away to death, God-fearing people are to come to their rescue.

And notice the point of verse 12. The author anticipates people turning a blind eye to injustice and claiming ignorance of it. The implication is that when we know about injustice, we should do everything in our power to put an end to it without excuse.

The worldwide genocide of babies is the greatest injustice I can imagine. The most helpless humans are those who don’t have a voice to plead their own cause. Who will rescue the unborn? Who will stand up for the rights of the unwanted children in our world? Who will defend those made in the image of God from their oppressors?

So, maybe the question is how can we (ordinary Christians) rescue those who are being taken away? Let me mention just a few very specific ways we can be involved in the pursuit of rescuing babies from abortion (this list is by no means exhaustive).

Start with prayer. Make it a regular practice to pray that abortion will once again be unthinkable in our land. God is the only one who can change hearts. Let’s plead with Him to do so.

Educate yourself. Stay updated on what is going on in the pro-life movement.

Support pro-life organizations that are on the front lines of helping and counseling abortion-minded women. You can start by learning more about your local pregnancy center.

Adopt a child or help someone else adopt. Adoption is a way to say to the world, “You may not want that child, but we do.” Adoption is THE greatest alternative to abortion. There needs to be an army of Christian parents and churches shouting to the world, “No child is unwanted. No child is a burden. Every child, no matter what gender, or color, or health is welcome here in my family.”

Teach you kids never to be ok with abortion. Our kids are growing up in a world where abortion is considered a normal part of life. Teach them that it is the greatest civil rights violation in the world today. Teach them that it is murder, no matter how accepted in our culture it is.

Challenge 2012: Crave the Word of God

As I do each new year, I challenged my church to love the Word of God. This year, I preached on the command in 1 Peter 2:2: "Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk that by it you may group up into salvation." God commands us to intensely crave His Word.

I showed from the context of this command that Peter is referring to the inspired Scriptures and the gospel they proclaim. I showed how Peter lifts up the value and power and benefits of God's Word at the end of chapter 1. And I laid out some practical encouragements to consume a lot of Bible in 2012.

In my sermon on craving the Word of God in 2012, the most important application point I made was that we should not just read the Bible, but meditate on the Bible. One way to be intentional about meditation is to write the Scripture word for word. That's why I love the idea of the "journible" (journal+Bible). In 2011, I used the Proverbs journible to write out ever verse in Proverbs and to record thoughts, questions, and observations.

On Giving Money

Tim Challies has a 2 part series at his blog on the issue of giving. In it, he answers 4 questions:

1. Do I have to give some of my money away?
2. What should be my attitude as I give money away?
3. Where am I to give?
4. How much am I to give?

I found Challies' succinct answers to these questions to be very helpful. In summary, he shows that as Christians we are indeed to give money away. We are to give cheerfully, mainly to our local church. And, we are to give sacrificially, where we actually feel that it is costing us something to give. He closes the series by showing that the tithe (giving 10% of our income) is meant to be a starting point for giving generously.

So, as you prepare for the new year, evaluate your own giving and plan to generously invest in the Kingdom of God in 2012. No greater investment can be made.

Incarnation and Redemption

1 Timothy 1:15: "This is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners."

Most people in America celebrate Christmas. However, very few people actually understand who and what Christmas really commemorates. Even Christians (including myself) are easily distracted this time of year from the main thing.

Christ Jesus

The second person of the Trinity. The promised Messiah. The annointed Savior.

Came

In becoming man, Jesus did not forsake His divine nature. He took on a human nature in addition to His divine nature. He was fully God and fully man united in one person. The Word became flesh...

Into the world

He did not just move from a mansion to the ghetto. He bridged the greatest gap imaginable: heaven to earth. The Creator assumed the nature of His creatures. The Eternal One submitted Himself to the limits of time. The all-powerful One made Himself weak. The Holy One exposed Himself to temptation. The perfect One in the womb of an imperfect woman.

To Save Sinners

Too many Christmas celebrations, songs, and gatherings focus simply on the baby in the manger. Jesus did not stay in the manger. The incarnation is nothing without the sinless life, substitutionary death, and powerful resurrrection of Jesus. He was born to die for our sins. He did not come simply to make us saveable. He came to actually save sinners.

Notice verse 17: Paul breaks out into doxology in response to these truths. Christ came into this world to save us from the wrath of God because of our sin, in order to free us to marvel at and enjoy the beauty of God for all eternity. The only proper response to the historical and theological truths of Christmas is to humbly, joyfully, and verbally give all glory, honor, and praise to God alone!

Kevin DeYoung has a gently challenging article on some steps to grow in our generosity. Here is the post in its entirety:

P – Pray for a generous heart. Make people a priority over prosperity. Don’t think: “How much do I have to give away in order to be obedient?” Ask: “Give me opportunities to sow.”

L – Lifestyle cap. As we earn more, we should give more. If you are wealthier than you used to be, have you done more to increase your standard of living or your standard of giving?

A – Accountability. Set goals and find someone you can trust who won’t be threatened by talking frankly about finances. Sex and money–we don’t talk about them nearly as much as Jesus did.

N – No less than a tithe. Whether the Old Testament requirement is a binding prescription or not, I find it hard to imagine that Western Christians who have seen the glory of God in the face of Christ and enjoy great prosperity, would want to give less than was required of the poorest Israelite. Statistics consistently show that Protestants give less than 3% of their income to their churches. A tithe, for most churchgoers, would be a huge step in the right direction.

What is the Unforgivable Sin?

As I studied to preach on Mark 3:20-30, I gathered a few of the best definitions of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

ESV Study Bible: It is attributing to Satan what is accomplished by the power of God – flagrant, willful, decisive judgment that the Spirit’s testimony about Jesus is satanic.
Wayne Grudem: It is unusually malicious, willful rejection and slander against the Holy Spirit’s work attesting to Christ, and attributing that work to Satan.
Dan Doriani: Blasphemy against the Spirit is the sober, clear-minded, deliberate rejection of Jesus—as a very agent of evil—despite full knowledge of his work and in the face of the Spirit’s full testimony of him.
Kent Hughes: “It is the ongoing, continual rejection of the witness of the Holy Spirit to the Divinity and Saviorhood of Christ.”

Here is the way I tried to simplify it in my sermon:

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is a clear, deliberate, malicious repudiation of Jesus Christ by someone who should know better.

Jesus + Nothing = Everything

I really enjoyed Tullian Tchividjian's new book on the gospel: Jesus + Nothing = Everything. That's a statement I've meditated on often and I found Tullian's book to be a fantastic treatise on it. This is a book full of illustrations and metaphors to help us battle legalism and preach the gospel to ourselves daily. If you are looking for an easy to read book to help you go deeper into the gospel, I'd highly recommend it.

Bloodlines is a Good Book

Thanks to Lit!, I read Piper's newest book, Bloodlines, more carefully and deliberately than any book in recent memory. This is a good and helpful book about how the gospel severs the root of racism. I'll let Piper summarize for you what the book is about and hope that you will take this recommendation to get and read this book.

"The aim of this book has been to encourage you to pursue Christ-exalting, gospel-driven racial and ethnic diversity and harmony--especially in the family of God, the church of Jesus Christ. I have tried to argue from Scripture that the blood of Christ was shed for this. It is not first a social issue, but a blood issue. The bloodline of Christ is deeper than the bloodlines of race" (p. 227).

The Deep Roots of Ethnic Diversity

A sample of how Piper shows that the gospel itself deals with the sin of racism:

"God's concern to include all the ethnic peoples of the world in his saving purposes--in his final, eternal family--is unbreakably linked with the two greatest realities in the universe: God's very being as one God and the way God has ordained to put sinners in the right with himself through justification in Christ. Ethnic diversity is not connected to God marginally. It's connected at the center--his infinite being and his single, glorious way of justifying sinners.

As this sinks into our minds and hearts, the effect it should have is to change the way we think and feel about the racial and ethnic diversity in the world and the church. We are constantly in danger of feeling (even when we are not thinking this way) that God is partial to our tribe--that he has a special liking for our ethnicity and cultural norms.

This danger is especially present and unseen among majority cultures and majority ethnic groups...This makes us very vulnerable to the assumption that God is our God in away that minimizes his being the God of other ethnic groups.

May the astonishing way that Paul speaks in Romans 3:29-30 of justification by faith alone awaken us from this deadly assumption. And may it fill us with a sense of amazement at God's passion in the pursuit of all the ethnic groups of the world. May we never forget that his pursuit is rooted in God's being one infinite God and in his justifying sinners in one glorious way through faith alone in the blood and righteousness of his Son, Jesus Christ."

The Power of Christ to Destroy Racism

Chapter 6 of Piper's new book, Bloodlines is a power-packed defense of how the gospel destroys the roots of racism. Piper gives 9 examples of how explosive the gospel can be in freeing us from the sins relating to racism. Here are my summaries of his 9 examples:

1. The gospel frees us from Satan's bondage.

2. The gospel frees us from our guilt.

3. The gospel shatters our pride.

4. The gospel gives us hope.

5. The gospel gives us a new identity.

6. The gospel frees us from the love of money (this section alone is worth the price of the book).

7. The gospel frees us to love.

8. The gospel removes our deepest fears.

9. The gospel gives us passion and zeal for good works.

You'll have to get the book to see how Piper fleshes these examples out. Excellent stuff.

A Christian Guide to Loving Books

Tony Reinke's Lit! A Christian Guide to Reading Books is a very good book on a far too neglected subject. Let's be honest. Not many of us have thought deeply about the importance of reading good books. And, not many of us have a strategy for a lifetime of reading good books. With so many books available, which books should we buy and read, and which books should we avoid? Reinke is here to help.

Lit! is divided into 2 sections: (1) A Theology of Books and Reading and (2) Some Practical Advice on Book Reading.

The first section is helpful because it lays a foundation for how to view books and why we should spend precious time reading books. Reinke makes clear that we should read all books in light of the one authoritative book (the Bible). He rehearses the gospel and makes sure we are shaped by a Biblical worldview.

The second section was most helpful and challenging to me. Some of my favorite chapters include: Six Priorities That Decide What Books I Read (and Don't Read), 20 Tips and Tricks for Reading Nonfiction Books, Six Ways to Find (and Protect) the Time You Need to Read Books, How Internet Habits Cripple Book Reading, and The Fine Art of Defacing Books with Pencils, Pens, and Highlighters.

A few of the practical issues that Lit! addresses:

-Which books to avoid.

-The benefits of reading "non-Christian" books.

-The benefits of reading fiction.

-The drawbacks of e-reading devices.

-Why and how to mark up a book with permanent ink.

-Reading in groups.

-Raising kids who love to read.

If you are serious about making the most of your reading, you should read this book. Or, if you have a long list of excuses for why you don't read, you should read this book.

This Sunday, my church turns 5 years old. God has been kind to us. Here is my annual anniversary letter that I wrote to my church family:

Christ Baptist Family,

It is pure joy to be one of your pastors. I love being a part of this church that strives to make much of Jesus Christ in everything. Through these past few months, I have realized just how blessed I am to have a church family that loves, supports, and encourages me constantly. I am a very happy pastor.

It is hard to believe that we are celebrating 5 years together as a church. When we first started Christ Baptist, we heard from several people that the first 5 years would be the most difficult. But, in reality, the joy has far outweighed the difficulty. Though we don’t deserve it, God has been incredibly kind to us. He continues to use this church to amaze me regularly.

God has done 10,000 things in and through Christ Baptist Church this year. Most of what He has done has been either undetected or unnoticed by us. But, perhaps the most obvious and evident mercy of God to us this year has been how He has used our small church to make a big impact on the wider Body of Christ. This fifth year has been the year of sending at Christ Baptist Church. God has made us a launching pad for spreading His mission all around this area.

We sent pastors to other churches, we sent men to train for pastoral ministry at seminary, and most significantly, we sent a portion of our own body to plant Crossway Church in Goldsboro. Of the 9 men (outside of the current elders) who were part of our elder training program last year, 8 have gone out to other places and other ministries. We’ve done what the church is supposed to do; we’ve multiplied ourselves for the spread of the gospel. Think of the hundreds of ways we have been a blessing, not just to each other, but to thousands of people we’ll never meet (in this life).

It is easy to lose sight of the big picture. We have been and will continue to be part of something much more significant than just our church. We are being used to impact not just this area, but ultimately, we are being used to impact lives all around the world. We are part of something bigger than we often realize. May the Savior be pleased to multiply our efforts all the more in the days to come.

What a blessing it was to camp in the book of Hebrews this past year. We have had a front row seat to the most spectacular glories this world has ever known. God, through His Word, has given us a sustained glimpse into the unrivaled supremacy of our Savior. Each week of this past year we were reminded that our Savior’s death for our sins was final and perfect. Jesus offered a single sacrifice for sins and then sat down at the right hand of the Father (Heb. 10:12). Church, may we ever fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Heb. 12:2). Endurance comes as we gaze on Jesus.

As we journey through the Gospel of Mark this next year, may God open our eyes to see more and more of the majesty of the glorious Son of God who lived and died in our place. May we learn to trust the One who came not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). Church, we are being changed into the image of Jesus, from one degree of glory to another, as we stare into His lovely face (2 Cor. 3:18).

Christ Baptist Church, I am excited and humbled as I think about what this year holds for us. I’m excited because serving the church of God is the most profound privilege in the whole world. This church is precious because the Savior shed His blood to purchase us for Himself. As John Stott has said, “If the church was worth his blood, is it not worth our labor? The privilege of serving it is established by the preciousness of the price paid for its purchase.” So, I’m excited because of the magnitude and glory of this task. But, I’m also humbled because of how inadequate I am for this task. I don’t have the answers or solutions to our weaknesses. I am a desperate pastor just trying to be faithful and waiting for the help of the Lord.

That’s actually what I want to call all of us to this year: desperation and dependence. We are nothing without Christ. Apart from Him we can do nothing. Church, let’s grow in desperation this year. Let’s be convinced that we need something we don’t have and can’t obtain by anything we do. Let’s humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, cry out to Him for help, and keep striving for faithfulness in everything.

Father, make us aware of how desperate we are for you. And if it would please you and serve your sovereign purposes, set us ablaze with love and passion for our Savior this year. Please, let us make much of Jesus by treasuring Him above all things, loving one another, and proclaiming him to the world.

Church, I thank God for you. Thank you for your kind encouragement and constant love for my family and I. I love you more than you know.

After studying every verse in Proverbs related to money, wealth, poverty, and riches, I noticed they all could be put into 3 categories. In my sermon Sunday, I tried to represent Proverbs' teaching on money with these 3 categories and 11 total principles:

(1) Acquiring Money Wisely

1. Don't make it your ambition to acquire money (Prov. 23:4)

2. God gives money through hard work and patience (Prov. 10:4).

3. Don't acquire money unjustly or unrighteously (Prov. 15:27, 22:16).

4. Don't seek to acquire money hastily (Prov. 13:11, 21:5).

(2) Using Money Wisely

I absolutely loved our short summer series on Proverbs. God has been kind to impart His wisdom to us so generously.

Here are some of my thoughts on the resources available for Proverbs:

1. The best commentary on Proverbs is the Mentor Commentary by John Kitchen.

2. The inspiration for this series came from the excellent little book, A Proverbs Driven Life by Selvaggio.

3. Waltke's 2 volume commentary in the NICOT series is extensive and fantastic. Volume 1. Volume 2.

4. Kidner's Tyndale commentary is the best short commentary on Proverbs. This is the best commentary in this series that I've used. But, I found myself wanting Kidner to say more.

5. That's it. Not many other good commentaries on Proverbs.

Sing ALL the Songs Sunday with Gusto

I think we ought to encourage every member of our churches to sing every song in the service with gusto, even if they don't particularly resonate with the song. Every Christian has a certain set of hymns and songs that deeply resonate with them---the melody, the words, an experience they had when they first heard it---and our natural tendency is to give those favorites everything we've got . . . but then sort of check out when the next song is one we don't particularly like. But here's the thing: When you sing in a congregation, you're not just singing for yourself; you're singing for every other member of the congregation, for their edification and building up in Christ, too. In I Corinthians 14:26, Paul tells us that when we come together, everything we do--including our singing--is done for each other. Singing hymns is not just an opportunity for each of us, as individuals, to worship God in our own way. It's an opportunity for the church, as a whole, to worship God together. That means that even if you don't like a particular song, it's likely that someone else in the congregation resonates with it deeply---they feel about it the same way you feel about your favorites---and so you have a responsibility to love that person by singing that song with all the heart you can muster. In other words, don't check out on songs that aren't your favorites; sing them! And sing them loud and heartily, not because you particularly like them, but because you may be helping to edify another brother or sister whose heart is engaged deeply with those songs. Worship isn't finally an individual experience; it's corporate. And everything we do--everything, Paul tells us, including our singing---should be done for the building up of the saints.

Some Helpful Principles to Keep in Mind When Reading Proverbs:

Context: Always interpret Proverbs in light of the rest of Scripture.

Meaning: Always interpret Proverbs as the original author intended. For example, many Proverbs are not meant to be taken literally (i.e. 22:29).

Application: Always remember that the goal of Proverbs is to change our lives, not simply to fill our minds.

Jesus: Always look for how the Savior is revealed through the wisdom of Proverbs (Luke 24:27). In Jesus are hidden all the treasures of wisdom (Col. 2:3).

Praying for Sovereign Grace Ministries

The readers of this blog who know me at all will know that I have been influenced and helped by CJ Mahaney and Sovereign Grace Ministries (SGM). I've read everything CJ has ever written, listened to dozens of his sermons, visited Sovereign Grace churches, and met CJ personally.

So, needless to say, I was saddened last week to hear the news that serious accusations have been made against CJ and SGM. As a result, CJ is temporarily stepping down as president of SGM and is submitting to a process of searching his heart and seeking godly counsel.

For those who are unfamiliar with the circumstances, here is a summary of what I understand has happened.

One particular Sovereign Grace leader has compiled and detailed these accusations and supported them with e-mails, phone calls, meeting notes, etc. This leader sent these detailed accusations to SGM pastors. Someone in SGM posted all of these documents online for anyone and everyone to read.

I've scrolled through the documents (I think its over 600 pages), and its not pretty. Did I mention that they are detailed? Painfully detailed.

My purpose in writing this post is simply informational. We need to be aware of what's going on. We need to pray that above all Christ will be honored and that all of this does not bring shame on our Savior. May God take these realities and use them to advance His mission in the world. I pray that SGM comes out of this stronger and more faithful and more humble.

I'm sure I'll have more reflections as more information becomes available. For now, let's all check our own hearts and realize that God cares how we respond to other's shame and humiliation.

My neighbor graduated from High School a few weeks ago. I gave him a copy of John Piper's God is the Gospel as a graduation gift. Here is what I wrote to him:

Neighbor John,
Congratulations! High School is over! I know you are excited about what lies ahead. I'm confident God has good plans for you.

I know it doesn't seem like it now, but this book is the best graduation present you have received. It's not the best because your neighbor gave it to you. It's not the best because it is the most expensive. It's not the best because it's what you've always wanted. This book is the best present because the message it contains is the most important message in the world. This book is about a glorious God who has given us Himself in the person and work of Jesus Christ. No gift is more valuable than the gift of God Himself. I hope you will take time to read this book sometime soon. And I hope its message impacts your life as much as it has mine.

Radical Together

I have been very challenged in recent days reading through David Platt's Radical Together: Unleashing the People of God for the Purpose of God. This is Platt's second "radical" book. The first one (my review here) mainly focuses on individual Christians being totally devoted to spreading the fame of Jesus. This second book focuses on how local churches should be totally devoted to the cause of Christ.

Radical Together is most applicable to church leaders but any church member can benefit from reading it. Basically, this book is a call to abandon "church as usual" and to increase our energies and giving toward the needs in this world.

One of the most powerful thoughts for me was that often good things keep us from doing the best things. The question is not, "what's wrong with it," but "how can we best impact the world for Christ." Platt calls us to lay everything on the table before God and honestly seek Him for what He wants us to be about.

Throughout the book, Platt shares examples and stories from his own congregation and their struggle to be totally devoted to Christ. I would encourage all pastors to read this book and begin leading your church to be radical for Christ.

Going Outside the Camp

Hebrews 13:13 calls us to go to Jesus outside the camp and bear the disgrace He endured. "Going outside the camp" is a metaphor for doing the hard thing and taking risks in identifying with Christ. We are called to follow a disgraced Savior. Here are just a few suggestions for practical ways we can obey this command in today's world:

Don’t settle for a small, minimalistic devotional life. Be radical in your devotion to the bible and to the gospel.

Give up your pursuit of the American Dream and embrace an all-encompassing purpose to make your life count for the gospel of Christ.

Adopt a child.

Get off the couch and go help someone. Get into someone's life. Spend your evenings serving others.

Get involved in the mess of relationships.

Get involved in a dispute and seek to be a peacemaker.

Confront someone you see doing wrong (it is your business).

Be the first one at church to help set up for Sunday morning and the last one to leave after its over (especially if you are part of a church plant!).

Fund the adoption of a young family.

Make every effort to be the most hospitable person in your church. Invite visitors out to lunch or to your house.

Invite someone to dinner who you have nothing in common with. You may be annoyed by this person. You may feel like if you invite them, they’ll never leave and you’ll have to kick them out. They may have several young kids. They may break something in your house. They may smell bad. They might steal something.

Chose to live in a “not as safe” neighborhood.

Do foreign missions.

Do evangelism. Don't worry about getting egg on your face.

Stand up at a public event and humbly invite people to trust in Jesus.

Cut your cable bill and use that money to fund a Bible Translation project.

Start a work-place Bible Study.

Organize a tutoring program for kids struggling in school.

Give gospel tracts to cashiers and drive-through attendants.

Visit a nursing home.

2. Very Helpful: Stuart Olyott's I Wish Someone Would Explain Hebrews to Me! and Raymond Brown's The Message of Hebrews

3. Good Homeletical Commentary: Richard Phillips' Reformed Expository Commentary.

4. Decent, but not as helpful as the others: FF Bruce's NICNT and George Guthrie's NIV Application.

5. Classics: John Owen (abridged in one volume) and AW Pink.

Church Websites

I really enjoyed Kevin DeYoung's thoughts on the connection between church websites and being welcoming (especially about the difference between "going cheap" and having a nice site). A visitor can immediately tell something about your church by its design and "feel."

I've found no place better for quality and economy and usability than Clover Sites. If your church needs a web update, consider going with Clover. It's easy.

I'll let you know when we get Christ Baptist's new Clover site up. It shouldn't be too much longer.

The Greener Grass Conspiracy

I absolutely loved Stephen Altrogge's new book, The Greener Grass Conspiracy: Finding Contentment on Your Side of the Fence.

This is a wise and funny and convicting book that I would encourage anyone to read.

Stephen exposes our chronic lack of contentment and points us to the healing balm of the gospel. This is really a book about the sufficiency of Jesus. He is more than able to satisfy us.

Stephen defines contentment as "a disposition of the heart that freely and joyfully submits to God's will, whatever that will may be." He shows how discontentment reveals the idols we worship and the ungratefulness in our hearts.

I particularly appreciated Altrogge's emphasis on the fact that contentment is not dependent on our circumstances. Since contentment is found in a Person (Jesus), we can be content in any and every circumstance of life (Phil. 4:10-13).

While reading this book, I felt at times like Stephen was speaking directly to my heart. He challenged my tendency to grumble when things don't go my way. And time and time again he applied the gospel to my soul. Get this book. You need it.

Jesus Will Come

It's Sunday, May 22 and the world has not ended and Jesus has not returned. For thousands of years people have been making predictions regarding the second coming of Christ and they have all been wrong. The reason they have been wrong is because they don't know when Jesus is returning. And, the Bible is clear that when Jesus comes (and He will come), no one will be expecting Him. That Harold Camping predicted May 21, 2011 as the Day of the Lord was evidence that Jesus was indeed not returning yesterday. Yesterday was the least likely day of the return of Jesus Christ. His coming will be unexpected. No one will be looking for Him. He will come like a thief in the night.

I think the main damage done by Camping and his followers is that they gave further reason for the world to scoff at the very idea that there is an "end of the world." They further hardened the hearts of those who already think the idea of Jesus' second coming ridiculous.

Make no mistake about it. Jesus will come. The world as we know it will end. There is a coming day of judgment. And that we have no idea when it will be, makes it no less certain that it will happen.

In fact, we are told why Jesus has not yet come. The Bible tells us why Jesus did not return yesterday.

2 Peter 3:9: "The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance."

The Lord is being patient. He desires for you to come to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

By now, you've probably heard the prediction of Harold Camping that Jesus will return on May 21, 2011 at 6pm. Camping can't be trusted. He's been wrong about this before (1994). He does not know when Jesus will return (Matthew 24:36). Only the Father knows that.

But, that Jesus is returning is without question. So, while Saturday will probably come and go just like last Saturday, don't be fooled. Jesus will return soon. And, He will take His own people to be with Himself in the place that He has prepared. And, He will judge and punish all those who refused to trust Him.

So, come Lord Jesus! Don't wait for Saturday. Come now...

Hebrews 9:28 - Jesus will appear a second time to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him.

Reflections on Turning 33

1. Jesus died for my sins when He was about 33 years old. What a Savior!
2. I’m officially getting old. I can remember when 33 sounded ancient.
3. If God allows me to live a long life, I’ve still got most of my life ahead of me.
4. I’ve now been a follower of Christ the majority of my life. God opened my heart when I was 16 years old.
5. My wife amazes me more and more as the years go by. There’s no one I’d rather grow old with than her.
6. I love being a dad. I don’t want to waste these most important years of my kids’ lives.
7. I was made to preach the Bible. I can’t believe I get paid to do what God has called me to do.
8. I’m praying that the fruitfulness of these next 33 years will be 100 times that of the past 33. I want to be used to the max for the glory of God.
9. There’s no more “one day I’ll…” Now is the time. Today is the day.
10. I should know more about God and the Bible than I do. I have wasted too much precious time.
11. I am a dependent man. My life can be traced through the influence of so many people. All I can say is, “thank you.”

For Those Suffering

You may be unable to comprehend why, but I urge you to believe in the firmness and stability of divine affection. You will have comfort in proportion to your trials. If you have shallow sorrows you will receive shallow graces. If you have deep afflictions you will obtain deeper proof of God’s faithfulness. I could lay down and die when I think of life’s trials, but like Sarah (Gen. 21:6) I recover and laugh when I remember that the eternal God is our refuge and that underneath are the everlasting arms (Deut. 33:27). God will not fail. God will not take away His hand until He has finished His purpose concerning us. Great trials bring great promises. Much afflicted one, there are great and mighty words that are not meant for saints of easier experiences. You will drink from the deep golden goblets reserved for those giants who can drink a great portion of wormwood, but God will also supply deep drinks of the well-refined wines on the lees (Is. 25:6). Trials greatly enlarge the soul. Thus I do not want, in my better mind, to escape great trials, since they involve great graces. If my strength shall be as my days (Deut. 33:25), then let my days be long and dark, for my strength will be mighty, God will be glorified, and I will be blessed. I earnestly urge every tested Christian to dwell on this truth, for it may be a great comfort. There is love, immortal and unchanging love, in heaven toward you, which will never grow cold. The Power of God's Word

I am absolutely loving Jonathan Leeman's new book, Reverberation. Here is a small taste from chapter 2:

5 Reliable Statements:

1. God's Word is an Extension of God - you can measure a person's opinion of God by his or her opinion of God's Word.

2. God Acts Through His Word - it is the way He accomplishes His purposes.
